In fact, many of the New York scenes could have been cut from the films run time and the overall story would be unaffected.Īnother problem I have is the addition of new characters.

It wasn't until we got to the island that the movie started to pick up and even then, I felt tired due to all the waiting it was about one hour before we even arrived at the island. Sure this gives time to know the characters more but I got so bored during many of the scenes and waited for something good to happen. King Kong is just over three hours long with the extended edition being even longer about 3 hrs. Unfortunately, the films biggest problem is the run time.

It is presented as a documentary, with many expeditions being led to the island. The book covers all of the islands inhabitants the creatures that never made it into the film most of them being some of the most terrifying creatures ever. To further add to the world building, a concept art book was released, The World of Kong: A Natural History of Skull Island. Everything is grand in scale and makes the world feel more alive than the original something is always moving onscreen, making the viewer want to take in everything. Easily the films biggest strength is its world-building. While a very well made movie made by a passionate director, there are some strengths and weaknesses. The game even has an alternate ending where Kong survives and is returned to Skull Island. As Kong, you have things a little easier as you play as the king of your world. As Jack, everything tries to kill you and you are constantly in survival mode, making some of the more intense scenes in the game get extremely heart pounding. You play as both Jack Driscol and Kong from a first and third person perspective respectfully. With the exceptions of a few scenes, the game is almost 100% different from the film. The game follows the film on a very rudimentary level. The film even had it's own tie-in game, Peter Jackson's KING KONG: The Official Game of the Movie. Peter Jackson's King Kong may be a remake, but it is one of those rare remakes one in which it is said to be on the same level as, or possibly even better than the original, making it the only King Kong movie to be as well received as the original masterpiece.

The effects were done by Jackson's crew at Weta Workshop, the same crew that brought Middle Earth to life, and they still hold up today. Upon it's release, King Kong was a major success, winning three Academy Awards, one for best special effects. One of my favorite Easter Eggs is when Kong is revealed to the audience the band plays the original theme and the natives are presented as what they looked like in the original, with the chief resembling Noble Johnson, complete with the Jungle Dance theme. He does this by setting the film in 1933 but also drops little Easter eggs, such as RKO studios working on a film directed by Merian C. Peter Jackson said that the original is what inspired him to make movies and that he wanted to pay his respects to the original. Due to the trilogy being so well received, Jackson was given the okay to direct the King Kong remake.Īs mentioned before, King Kong was made by a passionate director.

In the meantime, Jackson went to work on his next project: The Lord of the Rings trilogy, one of the most acclaimed film series of all time. Sadly it was not meant to be as the remakes of both Mighty Joe Young and Godzilla, two popular films from their time, would ultimately fail at the box office. The idea for another King Kong remake began as early as 1996 when director, Peter Jackson suggested the idea and was the one that attempted to helm the project.
